Privacy Notice

Last updated · 31 October 2026

This notice explains what we do with the email address you give us when you join the waitlist for The Great Cloud, and what happens when you play the game demo. It is intentionally short, because we collect very little.

It covers thegreatcloudgame.life and every subdomain of it — including expeditions.thegreatcloudgame.life, the page for our stand-alone strategy game Cloudfall: Expeditions (working title), and the /refiner/ page for our puzzle game Aether Refiner. It also covers the game demo at try.thegreatcloudgame.online (section 06). Any app we release carries its own privacy notice, published here before that app is available; the Aether Refiner app's notice is at /refiner/privacy.

Who is responsible for your data. The data controller is The Great Cloud LTD, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 17522895; registered office: Unit A, 82 James Carter Road, Mildenhall, IP28 7DE). It is registered with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), the UK data protection regulator, under registration number ZC275593, which you can look up on the ICO's public register. Contact: support@thegreatcloudgame.life.

01 What we collect

Only your email address, and only if you choose to submit it through the waitlist form. We do not ask for your name, location, or any other personal details. Your cookie preferences are managed by an open-source consent banner served from this website itself: your choice is kept in your own browser, and no third party receives or stores it. Until you choose, only strictly necessary storage is set — the record of your choice itself.

02 Analytics cookies

Google Analytics is not loaded at all unless you accept analytics cookies. If you do, we use Google Analytics to understand how the website is performing and which parts of The Great Cloud visitors seem most interested in — for example, which sections, updates, screenshots, or calls to action people spend time with. We use this to improve the site, spot technical issues, and learn what excites players most as development continues.

Analytics cookies do not give us your name or email address. Your email address is only collected if you choose to submit the waitlist form. You can change or withdraw your cookie choice at any time: Cookie settings opens the banner again. The same link appears at the foot of this website's pages, and in the game under Settings → Privacy.

03 Why we collect your email

Solely to send you the emails you signed up for. We run three separate lists, and you are only on the ones whose box you ticked: the The Great Cloud development newsletter, a monthly email about how the MMORPG is being built (development updates, devlogs, playtest openings and when account registration opens; after launch, patch notes and new content); founder-pack news, only the announcement that founder packs for The Great Cloud are open; and news about all our games, launches, playtests, offers and major updates across Aether Refiner, Cloudfall: Expeditions, The Great Cloud and any game we release later. Each continues after launch unless you unsubscribe from it. We rely on your consent, given when you tick the box on the form, as the legal basis for this. We will not use your address for anything else, and we will never sell or share it.

04 How it’s stored

Your email address is submitted to, stored, and processed by Brevo, our email service provider, who hold it securely on our behalf for the purpose described above. You can read Brevo’s own privacy practices at brevo.com/en/legal/privacypolicy.

Data collected Email address
Purpose News and updates, before and after launch, about The Great Cloud and other games set in its world
Legal basis Your consent (withdrawable at any time)
Processor Brevo
Retention Until you unsubscribe or request deletion

05 Hosting, fonts & game downloads

Our pages are served by Cloudflare. Their typefaces are served from this website itself — we do not load fonts from Google Fonts or any other third party, so fetching a page contacts no font service. As with any website, your browser sends your IP address and basic technical details (such as browser type) to Cloudflare in order to fetch the page, and Cloudflare also uses this to keep the site secure and available. We do not combine that information with your email address and we do not use it to identify you. See Cloudflare’s privacy policy.

When you play The Great Cloud in your browser, its game art (the 3D models and textures of the world) may also be downloaded from Cloudflare, at assets.thegreatcloudgame.online. Cloudflare receives the same basic technical details for those downloads, for the same purposes, and nothing else: the art is public, the requests carry no account details or cookies, and your game itself (your account, your character and everything you do in the world) runs on our own server. The game’s code, and the tools it uses to unpack its art, are also served from our own server.

06 Playing the demo

The game demo at try.thegreatcloudgame.online needs no account and no email address. This is what it does with your data:

Bot check. The demo page uses Cloudflare Turnstile to tell people from bots. Cloudflare processes your IP address and browser signals for that purpose, as our processor. Our server receives only Cloudflare's pass-or-fail answer; it does not send Cloudflare your address.

Keeping the demo available. To keep the demo available, we count requests per IP address and, when the demo is full, hold a short waiting list. Both live only in the server's memory, for minutes. IP addresses are never written to a database; our server logs carry at most a scrambled form of an address, made with a key that is thrown away whenever the server restarts, so it cannot be turned back into the address.

Your demo session. The demo creates no account. Your guest character, items and progress are temporary and do not carry over after the session. They exist only in the demo server's memory, under a temporary number, and are deleted when the session ends: when you leave or finish, when the server closes the session, or when the server restarts. Nothing about you is kept.

Demo statistics. During a demo we record what happens in play — that it started, which demo quests were taken and finished, deaths, whether the boss fight was reached, and how the demo ended — tagged only with that temporary number, which refers to no account and no person. These statistics stay on the demo server and are never joined to the website's analytics, to an email address or to an account. We use them to improve the demo.

The links at the end. When you leave the demo through one of its links (newsletter, founder-pack news, our social channels, the devlog or — once open — account creation) we count which link was chosen, without identifying you. The newsletter and founder-pack news sign-ups are handled by Brevo under its own terms, each on its own mailing list. Social platforms are outside this notice.

Founder-pack news. If you ask to hear when founder packs open, your email address is kept on a separate list used only for that announcement.

News about all our games. This list has its own sign-up form, and other forms can offer it as an optional, unticked box. It is separate from the development newsletter, you join it only if you tick its opt-in box, it is confirmed by a double-opt-in email, your address on it is never sold or passed on, and you can unsubscribe from any email it sends.

Data processed IP address and browser signals (bot check); IP address (request counting and the waiting list); a temporary session number
Purpose Keeping bots out, keeping the demo available, improving the demo
Legal basis Our legitimate interests in security, availability and improving the game
Processor Cloudflare (Turnstile); Brevo (the newsletter, founder-pack and all-games sign-ups)
Retention IP addresses: minutes, in memory only. The session: until it ends. Statistics: carry nothing that identifies you. Sign-ups: until you unsubscribe or request deletion

07 Unsubscribing & deleting your data

You can unsubscribe at any time using the link at the bottom of any email we send. To have your data permanently deleted from our records, simply email us from the address you signed up with and ask — we’ll remove it from Brevo. You also have the right to ask what data we hold about you and to have it corrected.

If you are unhappy with how we handle your data, please tell us first and we will look into it. You also have the right to complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint, or, in the EU, to your local data protection authority.
